Community Development - Comprehensive Plan

The Comprehensive Plan is the guiding policy document for growth and development in the City of Acworth. In the State of Georgia, all local governments are required to adopt comprehensive plans, in compliance with the Georgia Planning Act.

In 2001 the Mayor and Board of Aldermen appointed a 15-person committee to oversee a five-year update to the Comprehensive Plan. Following review by regional and state authorities, the 2001 Comprehensive Plan was officially adopted in March of 2002.

The Plan consists of several elements including Housing, Natural and Community Resources, Economic Development, Population and Land Use, which includes the Future Land Use Map. The Plan also includes a Short Term Work Program (STWP) and Capital Improvement Plan (CIE). These sections direct the City on implementation of projects within a five-year timeframe. The City is responsible for updating the Short Term Work Program and Capital Improvement Element annually.

The City of Acworth is in the process of adopting a new five-year update to the Comprehensive Plan. Participation from the public in this plan update is critical to develop a policy document that reflects the needs and desires of the community. For detailed information on the 2006 plan update, contact the Assistant City Manager.
