Information Technology
The City of Acworth established a full time information technology department in 2000 and hired Keith Wilson to manage the department. By the end of the year, a high speed VLAN (virtual local area network) was in place. Each computer was connected to a file server, mail server and a high speed internet connection. Since that time, the network has grown to include 15 servers, approximately 100 computers and over 150 users.
In 2002, the IT department began to build on the GIS (geographic information system) database. This project included plotting every parcel and land lot located inside the City of Acworth, along with owner information, customer type and other relative information. With this implementation and a growing need for data analysis and integrity modification, a new position was established. The GIS Specialist position was approved in the summer of 2002. Kathy Vaughan was hired in September 2002 to fill this position.
