The Community Development Department coordinates and facilitates strategies for the land development and redevelopment of the City. The Department consists of three divisions including: Building & Inspections, Planning & Zoning and GIS. The Chair appointed by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen for the Community Development Department is Alderman Brett North and the co-chair is Alderman Gene Pugliese.
Planning and Zoning
The Planning and Zoning division is responsible for reviewing applications and making recommendations for concept plans, rezoning, annexations, variances, site plans, subdivision plats and other development-related projects. This division is responsible for ensuring that proposed projects meet the minimum zoning and development standards, and generally are consistent with the goals of the Comprehensive Plan. The division also provides staff support to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Staff reviews, approves and issues all building construction permits required by the City’s Codes as well as inspects construction activities to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Acworth.
Inspections are done to ensure compliance with the State Mandated Construction Code as well as local Acworth codes and ordinances. The division also inspects existing tenant spaces prior to occupancy by new businesses.
GIS Map Portal
ESRI’s ArcView is used to compile all Geographic Information into a single mapping system. All parcel and land lot information is tracked, as well as yearly aerial photography of the city’s boundaries. The GIS department works closely with the police department to provide specialized mapping requests, assigns all new addresses within the City limits and creates and maintains all of the City’s mapping needs.
