Acworth Power
The Acworth Power System, operating since 1906 provides electric power to roughly 6000 residential and commercial customers throughout the City and portions of Cobb and Bartow Counties. The system operates three high power feeder sub-stations, hundreds of mile of overhead and underground power line, maintains 2000 poles, hundreds of transformers and high voltage switch gear. Acworth Power does not generate its own electricity, purchasing its power from various generating facilities through contract(s). As such, Acworth Power is a member of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG Power) and receives electricity via Georgia Power lines through the Georgia Integrated Transmission System (ITS). Acworth Power is also an active member of Electric Cities of Georgia (ECG), a co-op of fifty-two Georgia cities with similar power needs and issues. ECG provides engineering services, testing of service meters and other highly technical specialized services involving system efficiency. Being a member of MEAG and ECG helps keep and maintain low rates for small municipal systems through greater purchasing and legislative leverage.
The Department has 18 employees; linemen, warehouse personnel, power utility locate personnel and meter readers. All linemen are certificated through the ECG Lineman Apprentice Program and receive continuing power safety education. Acworth Power maintains a fleet of bucket and derrick trucks, trenchers, chippers, directional boring units, track hoes and other general service vehicles. Acworth Power provides 24-hour service 365 days a year.
